The allegory takes place at the foot of the sacred oak tree, a symbol of strength and wisdom, where the mercurial fountain of immortality flows forth. The fox represents that which is fixed, or solid and resistant to the fire, i.e. to change and transformation. The rooster, with its wings and feathers and ability to fly, is the volatile substance that flees the fire and is difficult to pin down. These two polarities find their physical expression in fixed sulphur and volatile mercury. Yet despite their inherently different natures, the fox and rooster are two states of one and the same matter. The union of the fixed and volatile is essentially a union of opposites that creates a third, superior and transcendent substance. The black, white, yellow, and red phases of the Great Work are mirrored in the corpse of the fox, the waters flowing from the oak, and the yellowing and reddening leaves on the branches, respectively. As the oak bends and reaches back into the waters of its own making, the Great Work is cyclical. Through many repetitions we mature and reach ever more rarified and sublime understandings within the Self.

Marlene Seven Bremner is a self-taught oil painter, working in a surrealist and allegorical style. We could say that the ending of any experience is a sort of death, whether that’s the end of your cup of coffee or the end of a relationship. It is an experience that you were having, that is no more. There is a definitive before and after, but the experience itself is continuous and does not end. The black sun (sol niger) is a symbol for the nigredo (“blackening”) stage of the alchemical work, synonymous with states of melancholy and the dark night of the soul. Yet this conjunction is the union of Soul and Spirit in a unio mentalis, the first stage of the conjunction, wherein they separate from the body and its submersion in the world of matter. While this is experienced as a “death,” this “mental union” imparts to the animal soul the divine influx of the heavenly realm, and with the tincture of jubilation and triumph over projected shadows, the body is prepared for its reunion with the spiritualized soul. Thus, rebirth is near at hand.
On another level, we are shown a dying world that is brought back to life through the divine creative power of the feminine. In a time that feels increasingly chaotic and unstable, we are each tasked with the work of both dreaming and birthing a new world into being. Nor do I fully want to reveal the extent of its personal meaning to me, as that is complicated and continuing to unfold. What I can share is that it revolves around the theme of a mirage that is being swept away by a force of change, capturing the simultaneous pain and revelation that disillusionment entails. Although the incoming sandstorm holds its own dangers, it is preferred over the illusion that came before. Hence the equine figure is taking the first decisive step in a new direction.
I’ve also contemplated this figure as the maker of illusions and dreams, with the towering, temple-like crown being the 'Storehouse of Images,' as in the above quote from Charles Baudelaire. In the Storehouse of Images, which the imagination uses as its pasture, live all possibilities and potentials. This creature is the Image-Maker whose imagination digests the symbols and signs of the field and transmutes them into new realities. In this case, the Image-Maker is dissolving one reality as a new one is being born from chaos."

- Marlene Seven Bremner

Marlene Seven Bremner is a self-taught oil painter, working in a surrealist and allegorical style. I didn’t set out to paint Kirtimukha. Rather, this figure revealed itself spontaneously, and synchronicity led me to understand who it was.
The story of Kirtimukha is found in the Hindu legends of the Skanda Purana. The great Titan King Jalandhara usurped the powers of the gods and established himself as the tyrannical ruler of a new order. With great hubris he sent the demon Rāhu (responsible for eclipses) to challenge Shiva, the Supreme Lord of the Universe for his bride-to-be, the beautiful Pārvatī, Lady of the Universe and embodiment of Shakti.
Shiva countered the demand by projecting from his Third Eye an eruption of wrathful power in the form of a lion-headed demon, emaciated, ravenous, and undeniably formidable. Its bulging eyes aflame and its gaping mouth roaring like thunder, the demon’s mane unfurled across space. Rāhu took sanctuary in Shiva’s embrace, depriving the demon of its promised meal. Filled with excruciating hunger, he consumed himself blindly until only his face remained.
The destructive aspect of the Supreme Lord gazed upon the demon as his beloved child, and named him Kirtimukha, “the Face of Glory.” Thus, Kirtimukha is a projected manifestation of Shiva’s wrath, and has become an apotropaic symbol to ward off the evil forces.
My intention is that this painting may serve as a talisman to protect the sacred generative powers of the creative process, as well as for protection from the dangers encountered during the dark passages of life. Through meditation upon this figure, we can align with the Absolute reality and the presence of pure awareness, awakening the Shakti-Kundalini energy within and encouraging unitive knowledge and inner transformation."
- Marlene Seven Bremner

Marlene Seven Bremner is a self-taught oil painter, working in a surrealist and allegorical style.
