Original Drawing by the late CJ Freeman
graphite on paper
24"x18"
Signed
An intriguing and provocative drawing which was the basis for an oil painting with the same title that later became the 3 of clubs in the popular "Doors of Somlipith" playing card oracle featuring the artwork of CJ Freeman with guidebook by his daughter, playing card scholar Ana Cortez. Signed by the artist and dated 1979. Note the crescent at the top of the wand, and the snake-like features at the bottom of the wand, which were later omitted in the final oil painting that became the 3 of clubs. ~ An exciting opportunity to collect work by this outsider artist who was relatively unknown in his lifetime but who created an impressive body of work that is having an affect on the world of oracle decks and playing card divination today.
Nearly 50 years old, the paper does show signs of age, a very small tear along the bottom edge, and minor warping due to exposure to moisture.
Charles J Freeman was a prolific self-taught painter and artist who dedicated his life to studying the secret language of playing cards. C.J. painted channeled imagery to elucidate the meanings of the cards and he and his daughter, Ana Cortez, developed two powerful oracle decks: The Playing Card Oracle, and The Doors of Somlipith; before he passed in 2010.
